Todd M. Pfeil |
Todd is a founding Member of Curran & Pfeil, LLC and practices in the areas of Agricultural law, Construction law, Employment law, Business law, Probate, Real Estate Law and Litigation/Arbitration. Before starting Curran & Pfeil, LLC, Todd worked in the industries he now represents. This gives Todd a unique perspective on business, agribusiness and construction.
Todd spent his formative years working on a dairy farm outside of Waunakee, Wisconsin. During this period, he learned the practice of farming from the “ground-up.” It was during this time he was taught a work ethic that remains with him to this day.
After graduation from high school, Todd attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and studied Agricultural Economics. During his undergraduate years he worked as a laborer for a national heavy highway contractor assisting in the building of bridges throughout the State of Wisconsin. The work Todd did during his undergraduate years also emphasized a strong work ethic and again allowed him to learn another business from the “ground-up.”
During law school, Todd continued to work for this same contractor clerking for outside counsel. He learned how to write and review contracts and subcontracts; to prepare and litigate delay, interference and damage claims; he learned how to file and defend lien and payment performance bond claims; and he learned how to work with employees and labor unions. Upon graduation from law school, Todd took a position with this contractor ultimately achieving the position of Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and Head of Human Resources and Risk Management. While at this job he was involved in litigation and arbitrations on a national level from Kansas to Colorado to Arizona. Of note, he was part of the trial team that won an $850,000.00 jury verdict against the Kansas Department of Transportation which was upheld on appeal. In this role he negotiated union contracts, handled grievance hearings and was involved in all aspects of human resources and risk management. Details of this aspect included: dealing with claims of harassment and other forms of discrimination; hiring and firing employees; writing employee handbooks and working with insurance and safety. Because of this enormous responsibility Todd gained a great deal of insight into what it takes to run a company.
Following this experience, Todd was a founding member of a three-person law firm in Black Earth, Wisconsin. Starting with no clients, Todd and his partners built a successful business in a small town from the “ground-up.” This firm provided Todd with an opportunity to operate a small business and understand the issues confronting the small business owner from marketing to working with vendors to making payroll.
Todd understands what it takes to be successful. He has provided his clients with the highest quality legal services for 25 years. While much of Todd’s practice focuses on construction issues from drafting construction contracts and liens to litigating or arbitrating construction claims, he also continues to handle agricultural law, business law real estate law, probate and employment law matters. He represents individuals and businesses in state and federal courts and before arbitration panels throughout the United States.
